Western Esotericism and Rituals of Initiation
By Henrik Bogdan

For more than 300 years the practice of Masonic rituals of initiation has been part of Western culture, spreading far beyond the boundaries of traditional Freemasonry. Henrik Bogdan explores the historical development of these rituals and their relationship with Western esotericism. Beginning with the Craft degrees of Freemasonry--the blueprints, as it were, of all later Masonic rituals of initiation--Bogdan examines the development of the Masonic High Degrees, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn--the most influential of all 19th-century occultist initiatory societies--and Gerald Gardner's Witchcraft movement of the 1950s, one of the first large-scale Western esoteric New Religions Movements.

Isaac Newtons Freemasonry:
The Alchemy of Science and Mysticism
By Alain Bauer

Freemasonry, as a fraternal order of scientists and philosophers, emerged in the 17th century and represented something new- an amalgam of alchemy and science that allowed the creative genius of Isaac Newton and his contemporaries to flourish. In Isaac Newton's Freemasonry, Alain Bauer presents the swirl of historical, sociological, and religious influences that sparked the spiritual ferment and transformation of that time. His research shows that Freemasonry represented a crossroads between science and spirituality and became the vehicle for promoting spiritual and intellectual egalitarianism. Isaac Newton was seminal in the "invention" of this new form of Freemasonry, which allowed Newton and other like-minded associates to free themselves of the church's monopoly on the intellectual milieu of the time. This form of Freemasonry created an ideological blueprint that sought to move England beyond the civil wars generated by its religious conflicts to a society with scientific progress as its foundation and standard. The "science" of these men was rooted in the Hermetic tradition and included alchemy and even elements of magic. Yet, in contrast to the endless reinterpretations of church doctrine that fueled the conflicts ravaging England, this new society of Accepted Freemasons provided an intellectual haven and creative crucible for scientific and political progress. This book reveals the connections of Rosslyn Chapel, Henry Sinclair, and the Invisible College to Newton's role in 17th-century Freemasonry and opens unexplored trails into the history of Freemasonry in Europe.

The Secret Founding of America:
The Real Story of Freemasons, Puritans, & the Battle for The New World
By Nicholas Hagger

Ask most Americans where the country's origins lie and they'll point to the Mayflower and its settlers—whom we often think of as the earliest arrivals to our shores. But something existed even before that: Jamestown. Its founders had thoroughly different values than the Puritans, and their Masonic beliefs indelibly shaped America's future. This authoritative, accessible, and absorbing history takes a fresh look at the past to reveal the truth about why the United States is now run by Freemasons who are Christians, too. Drawing on original findings, and exhibiting a rich, in-depth understanding of the political and philosophical realities of the time, acclaimed author Nicholas Hagger argues that the new nation, conceived in liberty, was the Freemasons' first step towards a new world order. He charts the connections between secret societies and libertarian ideals, explains how the influence of German Illuminati worked on the framers of the new republic, and shows the hand of Freemasonry at work at every turning point in America's history—from the Civil War to the Cold War to today's global struggles for democracy. It's a fascinating subject, and one that will also be at the center of Dan Brown's next book—so interest is sure to be high and the tie-in potential immense.

Secret Societies:
Illuminati, Freemasons, and the French Revolution
By Una Birch, James Wasserman

The greatest success of the Bavarian Illuminati conspiracy was the French Revolution of 1789. The profound impact of that Revolution is felt to this day in the political destinies of billions of people worldwide. The Illuminati had declared war against Church and State a decade earlier and worked feverishly to spread their new gospel of Liberty and Reason. Although the Order was officially suppressed on the eve of the Revolution, its efforts do not appear to have been in vain. The recruiting program of Illuminati founder Adam Weishaupt was focused on attracting the powerful and influential government ministers, educators, the press, authors and philosophers, booksellers and publishers, even religious leaders open to agnostic or atheist views. Many such men belonged to the masonic lodges of Germany, Austria, and France. The wider masonic network offered Weishaupt a respectable vehicle by which he was able to propagate his clandestine doctrines. What message does the triumph of these secret societies carry for the modern world? English historian Una Birch attempts to answer this question from the point of view of the early twentieth century. Writing just a hundred years after the event, her closeness in time, and sympathy for the Revolution, offer a unique perspective to the modern reader. Editor James Wasserman adds a contemporary perspective that takes into account the events of the twentieth century that occurred after Ms. Birch wrote. He has also added a guide to the history and personalities of the French Revolution to help clarify the text.

Builders of Empire:
Freemasonry and British Imperialism, 1717-1927
By Jessica L. Harland-Jacobs

They built some of the first communal structures on the empire's frontiers. The empire's most powerful proconsuls sought entrance into their lodges. Their public rituals drew dense crowds from Montreal to Madras. In this first study of the relationship between Freemasonry and British imperialism, Harland-Jacobs takes readers on a journey across two centuries and five continents, demonstrating that from the moment it left Britain's shores, Freemasonry proved central to the building and cohesion of the British Empire. As Freemasonry spread to Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australasia, and Africa, the group's claims of cosmopolitan brotherhood were put to the test. Harland-Jacobs examines the brotherhood's role in diverse colonial settings and the impact of the empire on the brotherhood; in the process, she addresses issues of globalization, supranational identities, imperial power, fraternalism, and masculinity.

Conspiracy And the Freemasons:
How the Secret Society And Their Enemies Shaped the Modern World
By J. Madison Davis

In 1752, at the age of twenty, George Washington paid what was then a very handsome sum of twenty-three pounds to join a new Lodge of Masons in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Among the Masons were many of our nations founding fathers, including Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, John Paul Jones, and Paul Revere. But what was the Masons agenda? How did the Masons influence the shape of our country? What dark secrets does the Mason-influenced architecture of our nations capital hold? And lastly, what exactly is the Solomon Key? Conspiracy and the Freemasons takes you on an enlightening and entertaining journey through the connections between the Masons, the founding fathers, and the secret architecture of our nations capital (major aspects of The Solomon Key), while examining the historical, international, and apocryphal conspiracies long associated with the secret society of the Freemasons.

Opening the Ark of the Covenant: The Secret Power of the Ancients, the Knights Templar Connection, And the Search for the Holy Grail
By Frank Joseph, Laura Beaudoin

The Ark of the Covenant is at once the most famous and baffling article in history. Although it is cited more often than any other object throughout the Old Testament and was described as the ancient Hebrews' most precious possession, its real meaning and ultimate fate were utterly unknown…until now. During his worldwide research into its disappearance, author Frank Joseph learned that the Ark was not a mere legend; nor was it just an elaborate box used to store the original Ten Commandments. It was, he asserts, purpose-built to harness the powers of the Earth for humanity's continued physical existence and spiritual evolution. As such, it is the single most priceless fortune mankind has ever possessed. Following the Ark through the Book of Exodus, he discovered its lineage pre-dated the Bible, extending back in time to ancient Egypt and stories of lost Atlantis. Joseph traced the exact circumstances of the Ark's rediscovery under Jerusalem's Temple Mount by the Knights Templar. Having found the precious object, they returned with it to France, where its clandestine journey across Europe would last for the next 800 years. Opening the Ark of the Covenant is the result of a quarter-century-long investigation. It leads from the sea-bottom off the coast of Florida to the remote heights of France's Pyrenees Mountains and Japan's secret shrines; from the Nile Valley to the Valley of Mexico. This uniquely far-flung, in-depth hunt for the truth about mankind's most valuable possession reveals the Ark's actual function, purpose and location. Opening the Ark of the Covenant is a fact-based examination of the Arks real origins, manufactured purpose, historical application, and present whereabouts. Revealing its genuine nature and ultimate destiny represents the most profound disclosure of its kind, powerful enough to shake the foundations of established religions and modern science alike.

Masonic Temples:
Freemasonry, Ritual Architecture, and Masculine Archetypes
By William D. Moore

William D. Moore introduces readers to the structures American Freemasons erected over the 60 year period from 1870 to 1930, when these temples became a ubiquitous feature of the American landscape. As representations of King Solomon's temple in ancient Jerusalem erected in almost every American town and city, Masonic temples provided specially designed spaces for the enactment of this influential fraternity's secret rituals. Using New York State as a case study, Moore not only analyzes the design and construction of Masonic structures and provides their historical context, but he also links the temples to American concepts of masculinity during this period of profound economic and social transformation. By examining edifices previously overlooked by architectural and social historians, Moore decodes the design and social function of Masonic architecture and offers compelling new insights into the construction of American masculinity. Four distinct sets of Masonic ritual spaces - the Masonic lodge room, the armory and drill room of the Knights Templar, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and the Shriners' mosque – form the central focus of this volume. Moore argues that these spaces and their accompanying ceremonies communicated four alternative masculine archetypes to American Freemasons—the heroic artisan, the holy warrior, the adept or wise man, and the frivolous jester or fool.

Freemason's Guide and Compendium
New and Revised Edition
By Bernard E. Jones

First published in 1950, the Freemasons' Guide and Compendium is filled with authentic, detailed information on a wide variety of subjects related to masons and masonry. Written by an experienced Freemason with the interests of rank-and-file members of the ordinary lodge in mind—especially the young Craftsman who wishes to learn the nature of Freemasonry's claim to have a history that goes back to ancient days—it provides key facts about masonic history, tradition, and lore. In doing so, the book offers a far greater scope of information than any other comparable work. And Bernard E. Jones critically examines conflicting ideas about how some of the traditions came to be, coming to conclusions of his own. The early chapters of Freemasons' Guide and Compendium describe how the masonic guilds arose in eleven-century England after the Norman conquest. From there Jones moves into the emergence of speculative Freemasonry in the late medieval period and exlpores its amazing growth as an esoteric system during the 18th century. The major part of the book consists of a comprehensive, systematic presentation of information about masonry's customs, principles and tenets, words and phrases, lodge appointments and working tools, symbols and emblems. With the help of the guide and compendium, the Craftsman will have no difficulty in making daily progress in masonic knowledge, and the thorough, exhaustive index will help him to access a great story of knowledge.

The Meaning of Masonry
By W. L. Wilmshurst

The papers here collected have been written with a view to promoting the deeper understanding of the meaning of Masonry; to providing the explanation of it that one constantly hears called for. The meaning of Masonry, however, is a subject usually left entirely unexpounded and that accordingly remains largely unrealized by its members save such few as make it their private study. It seems taken for granted that reception into the Order will automatically be accompanied by an ability to appreciate forthwith and at its full value all that one there finds. The contrary is the case, for Masonry is a veiled and cryptic expression of the difficult science of spiritual life, and the understanding of it calls for special and informed guidance on the one hand, and on the other a genuine and earnest desire for knowledge on the part of those seeking to be instructed. Contents: The Position and Possibilities of the Masonic Order; Deeper Symbolism of Freemasonry; Masonry as a Philosophy; Further Notes on Craft Symbolism; The Form of the Lodge; Holy Royal Arch of Jerusalem; Freemasonry in Relation to the Ancient Mysteries.

The Brotherhood:
Inside the Secret World of the Freemasons
By Tom Dedopolus

The Freemasons are the world's best-known fraternity. Famous for their secretive nature and impressive roster of historical members, they are often regarded as a sinister force operating behind the scenes. Some dismiss them as a group of old men who dress up to play games and indulge in a convivial dinner. Others believe they are a corrupting network of avid nepotists and political dabblers, pulling society's strings for their own dark ends. This is a long way from the Order's original reputation as a force of enlightenment, social responsibility, and scientific awareness. Behind the rumors, hearsay, and façade of secrecy, Freemasonry resonates with a beautiful tradition of philosophical symbolism. The journey through the degrees of Masonry is the journey through life itself. Written by the grandson of a very high-ranking Mason, The Brotherhood is a fascinating look inside an enigmatic institution. Starting with the visible structure of international Freemasonry and the myths and legends that surround it, the book moves on to examine the true meaning of Freemasonry—its mythological and real history, its social context, and the symbolism and philosophy that illuminates every aspect of the Craft, with a look at the current state of Freemasonry today.

Mozart the Freemason:
The Masonic Influence on His Musical Genius
By Jacques Henry

Thanks to recently discovered documents, we now have a fuller picture of the esoteric influences on the life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Musicologist Jacques Henry shows that the Masonic influence on Mozart goes beyond those pieces, such as The Magic Flute, that fulfilled a ritual purpose for the composer. His works actually provide a complete musical lexicon of Masonic symbols inspired by the principles of the craft and the spirit of the Masonic quest. Mozart constructed his Masonic compositions by creating auditory correspondences to the symbols present in the rituals, choosing keys and tempos that transpose their content into harmony. His understanding of the use of symbol allowed him to create music that would lead the listener into a harmony that transcended earthly existence. A number of musicologists believe that the place of the Masonic spiritual vision in Mozart's work is comparable to that held by Lutheran Christianity in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. Mozart wed his deep understanding of music to the esoteric wisdom he gained as a Freemason. Henry provides a rigorous and original analysis of Mozart's works that reveals their inner meaning as shaped by the composer's profound embrace of the spiritual principles of Freemasonry.

The Secret History Of Freemasonry:
Its Origins And Connection To The Knights Templar
By Paul Naudon

Historians often make a sharp distinction between the operative Masonry of the Middle Ages and the speculative Masonry of modern times, emphasizing that there is no direct bridge connecting the two. Modern historians also have scoffed at Masonic claims concerning the close relationship between the Lodge and the Temple. Using medieval archives housed throughout Europe, historian Paul Naudon reveals that there was in fact a very intimate connection between the Masons and the Knights Templar. Church records of medieval Paris show that most, if not all, the Masons of that time were residents of the Templar censive, which allowed them to enjoy great exemptions and liberties from both church and state as a result of the protection afforded them by this powerful order. Naudon shows that the origins of Freemasonry can be traced back to the collegia of ancient Rome. He traces the evolution of organizations such as the Comacine Masters, the Arab turuqs, and the brotherhoods of builders created under the aegis of the Benedictines and the Knights Templar, all of which provide the vehicle for the transmission of a sacred tradition from pre-Christian times to the modern era.

American Freemasons:
Three Centuries Of Building Communities
By Mark A. Tabbert

Volunteer associations of all varieties form the foundation of American history and culture. By far, the oldest and largest of all American volunteer associations is Freemasonry, but what exactly is Freemasonry? Why have three centuries of American men--from Paul Revere and Ben Franklin to Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Harry Truman and Thurgood Marshall--been drawn to its rituals, symbols and precepts? And why did John Quincy Adams call it "a seed of evil, which can never produce any good?" Published in conjunction with the National Heritage Museum, this extravagantly illustrated volume offers a brief overview of Freemasonry's origins in 17th-century Scotland and England before exploring its evolving role in American history, from the Revolution through the labor and civil rights movements, and into the 21st century. American Freemasons explores some of the causes for the rise and fall of membership in the fraternity and why it has attracted men in such large numbers for centuries. Tabbert also examines the relationship between the privacy of a Masonic lodge and the public environment of the American community. American Freemasons is the perfect introduction to understanding a society that, while shrouded in mystery, has played an integral role in the lives and communities of millions of Americans.

Secret Societies Of The Middle Ages: Assassins, Templars, And Westphalian Tribunals
By Thomas Keightley

Secret Societies of the Middle Ages explores the foundations of modern secret societies, examining the history and known facts of three very different organizations:

1. The Assassins of the Middle East--how they evolved from an Islamic religious sect into one of the most feared groups in all the world and how the very name of this ancient order became the word used for political killings of this nature.

2. The Templars of Europe--from a pious group of protectors and dedicated crusaders to their bitter end persecuted as heretics, they introduced the concept of banking to the world while amassing a fortune of incalculable wealth.

3. The Secret Tribunals of Westphalia--the feared and self-appointed judicial group who passed judgment and performed executions in a time of lawlessness in Germany. They enjoyed popular support, providing a rudimentary and vigilante law at a time when warlords ruled and the emperor was ineffective.

The echoes of these particular societies are still heard today--from presidential offices to battlegrounds in the Middle East. Secret Societies of the Middle Ages, originally published in 1846, was the first book to gather information on these secret orders. This foundational reference work, upon which many contemporary histories have relied, is now back in print with an introduction by James Wasserman, author of The Templars and the Assassins: The Militia of Heaven.

The Lost Keys of Freemasonry

By Manly P. Hall

Here is Manly P. Hall's classic work on history's most secretive brotherhood- reset and collected with two additional celebrated Hall volumes on occult Masonry. Freemasonry is the subject of perennial fascination-recently the cover story of a national newsmagazine, the premise of the movie National Treasure, and the anticipated basis of a forthcoming novel by Dan Brown. The twentieth century's great scholar of occult and esoteric ideas, Manly P. Hall was a Mason himself and nurtured a lifelong interest in the secret fraternal order, making it the focus of one of his earliest and best-loved books, The Lost Keys of Freemasonry. In this celebrated work, he examines the ethical training required of a Freemason, and the character traits a Mason must "build" within himself. Hall's 1923 volume is now reset and made available exclusively in this new edition, along with the author's two further classics on Masonry: Freemasonry of the Ancient Egyptians (1937), which explores the roots of Freemasonry in the initiatory temple rites of Pharaonic Egypt * Masonic Orders of Fraternity (1950), a fascinating work of short history that chronicles the reemergence of Freemasonry in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It surveys the lives of Masonry's modern architects and the secretive organizations that immediately preceded the brotherhood. This three-in-one volume features the original illustrations of each book, for a total of nearly thirty images, including recreations of scenes and rites from Masonry's unusual history. It also includes a new index encompassing all three titles.

Many Masonic parliamentarians shudder at the thought of the original, classic "Robert's Rules of Order" being used in a Masonic lodge. The reasons for the disapproval are not hard to understand. The original work simply does not apply to the lodge in many important areas. While the proper operation of a Masonic lodge does employ basic parliamentary procedures, many aspects of a properly run club meeting simply do not apply to the lodge. Regardless of the many problems with the classic "Robert's Rules of Order", it enjoys use in many lodges. Some Grand Lodges even have the classic work as part of the suggested tools for proper lodge operation. The danger, of course, is that an inexperienced Mason could fail to separate the useful aspects of the work and put to use some parliamentary procedures that are wholly inappropriate for the lodge. Rather than fight the use of the very popular book, the decision was made to revise the work so that it would be better suited for the lodge.

The Virgin Mary Conspiracy:
The True Father of Christ and the Tomb of the Virgin
By Graham Phillips

By skillful reading and brilliant exegesis, Phillips seems to have discovered that after the crucifixion, Mary and her second husband Joseph left the Middle East and traveled to England. This sounds a fantastic claim, but travel to all of Europe was well-established even then, and England was a major mining land, selling lead and iron to much of the world. The records show that St. Augustine traveled to Britain, and reported back that a thriving Christian community existed there, including several references to a mysterious Holy Grail. Unlike the myriad fabrications (e.g., Holy Blood, Holy Grail, The DaVinci Code) Phillips sticks to the facts. His central thesis: Mary, the mother of Jesus, traveled to Britain and died there. Her grave site is now known but as yet unexcavated. No one seems particularly interested to put the question to the test. No Catholic is interested because their 19th Century dogma asserts that Mary, too, ascended bodily into heaven, and you are not permitted to believe otherwise. Phillips' great strength is not in amassing large lists of footnotes-all the charlatans have discovered that trick. His skill is in thinking about what facts mean, rejecting those that don't fit, and placing the rest in the correct order. The result is so startling, the Orthodoxy will not even arch an eyebrow of interest. Meanwhile, the rest of us have an intellectual feast of epicurean proportions.

Talisman:
Sacred Cities, Secret Faith
By Graham Hancock, Robert Bauval

What the authors have uncovered is a heretical tradition rooted in Hermeticism in Egypt which has, for the past thousand years, been a hidden opponent of the Christian Church. At many of the key turning points in Western history, this tradition bursts out into the open in strange ways. The first Renaissance Pope became fascinated by the Hermetic texts and their haunting desire for a new utopian city and had paintings of pyramids installed on his bedroom celling. The Masonic members of England's Royal Society, who also rebuilt London after the Fire of London, planned to turn it into a symbolic capital of this secret tradition; Louise XI specifically set out to make himself out to be the Sun King and to refashion the design of Paris to mimic Egyptian temples. The Founding Fathers, almost all Freemasons, left signs of this secret agenda in their architectural plans of Washington, D.C., and in the symbols of the new republic (e.g. the Masonic symbols on the dollar bill). It is impossible to avoid the symbolic challenge of the Washington Memorial and the new glass pyramid in the Louvre (the culmination of centuries of surrepetitious architectural manipulation of the city plan of Paris).

The Merovingian Mythos and the Mystery of Rennes-le-Chateau
By Tracy R. Twyman

Occult expert & historian Tracy R. Twyman has been investigating the Holy Grail and Rennes-le-Chateau, and has written extensively about it in Dagobert's Revenge Magazine. She discovered that the bloodline of the Merovingians stems not only from Christ and Mary Magdalene, but goes back to the god-kings of the antediluvian world. She has determined the nature of the physical object called "the Holy Grail" - a magnificent structure hidden beneath Rennes-le-Chateau. Within this structure is the greatest treasure of human history: the grave of a sacred king named Cain, who brought the wisdom of the gods down from Heaven. The Grail has inspired secret societies and the destiny of humanity. Twyman deciphers clues left by the Priory of Sion, the Knights Templar, and the Freemasons, found in history, mythology, scriptures, and the traditions of the occult, resulting in a reinterpretation of the story of civilization.
